Welcome

1170 restaurant was launched in July 2009. It is situated above Neville’s main bar with its own entrance from the street. We pride ourselves on specialising in simple, high quality Irish cooking with a focus on locally sourced organic produce.

Neville is a Norman name and we wanted to reflect our heritage in the restaurant, hence the name 1170 which was the year the Normans landed on Baginbun strand located 2km south of Fethard on Sea.

The interior of the 1170 restaurant1170, Battle of Baginbun. In 1169 Richard de Clare, earl of Pembroke, known as Strongbow, decided to Seek territory in Ireland. In 1170 a small advance party commanded by Raymond le Gros dug in at Baginbun Head and was attacked by a vastly superior force of 3,000 Norsemen and Irish. The invaders were successful due to their superior weapons and defensive fortifications (these earthworks can be still seen). Strongbow then joined them, took Waterford and Dublin, and declared himself king of Leinster. The first English foothold in Ireland had been obtained.
